Imagine a shore of pebbles with a beautiful, calm and clear turquoise lake just beneath the snow-crowned mountains and a historical church just few metres away from the scenic shore, how would you feel? I am sure, you will definitely feel the air of heaven just like I did at Lake Tekapo.
An hour of flight journey from Auckland to christchurch, then a 3+ hours of pleasant drive to Lake Tekapo was completely worth. Every journey is a dream come true. I would say, Lake Tekapo is something more what I dreamt of. The scenery was stunning.
“How great thou art!!!” was the first phrase that hit my nerves, when I first saw a glimpse of the beautiful scenery of Lake Tekapo. I had no other words to speak and think about. I am sure my little girl and my husband felt the same. We were not in a hurry to move, we had time to feel the breeze and it was all we needed and all we wanted on a quick 4 day trip from north to south.
The church of the Good Shepherd is the highlight here. The church is built on the shores of the Lake Tekapo with the view of the Tekapo town on one side and the beautiful scenery on the other side. The church is not a just another spot, it has a meaning for being there. If you get into the church, you will know it. The altar of the church has just a cross and nothing else and it has glass windows behind the cross overlooking the beautiful scenery. Whoever gets inside will get to see God’s beautiful creation and just say thanks for creating such wonders.
I liked this phrase when I was reading about this church, “Somehow the setting and the church combine to speak of God to those who enter and pause in the midst of their busy lives.” – Peter Hurricks. How true is that!!!
With a great feel of grace at heart, we sat by the shores very close to the water just feeling the gentle breeze. It was heavenly.
Star gazing in the Mackenzie region
Mackenzie region is a world-renowned place for stargazing because the light and the air pollution is less here and that’s the reason they have built the Astronomical Research observatory on top of Mt John. It is one of only eight dark sky reserves in the world. Earth and sky tours have many day and night tours which include viewing the milky way, distant star clusters, planets or the craters of the moon.
Lake Tekapo on a Full moon Night
Our night stay at Tekapo was even more special. It was a full moon day and it made the night more special. Snow crowned mountains lit by the full moon light and the clear lake reflecting the light silhouetting the trees was a scene of a life time. It was such a blessing. What else to say!!!
I regret for not being a professional photographer. I couldn’t capture the real scene. This is what I managed to take. Sorry for the poor picture!!!
And the sun rise cannot be underrated. Like the one scenery we used to draw during our early childhood with the bright burning sun showing her half face between two mountains with the water beneath. It was such a scene in real.
Lake Tekapo is not just about the Lake but more than that
Tekapo is not just about the lake but more than that. It has plenty for activities to offer like skiing, hiking, snow activities at Tekapo springs and earth and sky tours at Mt John Observatory.
The other best thing about Tekapo is to hike Mt John to the Observatory and the Astro cafe at the top of Mt John is “Possibly the best place on the globe for a cafe”, said Lonely planet. Sipping the hot coffee at an altitude of 1,029 metres in one of the best café on the earth with an incredible 360° panaromic view of the alpine is a breathtaking moment by itself.
Our stay at Tekapo Town – where to stay
We had a night stay at Lake Tekapo Homes and Holiday Park. It was one of the best places to stay at Tekapo. Every unit has a very good view of the lake and the clouded snowy mountains. It is located on the shores of Lake Tekapo and it is just 5 mins of walk away from Tekapo springs and the base of Mt John.
If you are visiting Lake Tekapo, make sure you stay by the lake side. There are plenty of accommodation available in this area but still a very few by the lake side. You won’t regret it!
We witnessed this wonderland in winter and it has become the best I have ever seen. I really wish to visit this place again in summer. If you ever get a chance to visit NZ, make sure you stay here for at least a night. I bet, you will fall in love with this fairy land at first sight!!
Have you ever been to such a wonderland??
Share your memories!! I would love to hear back your stories!!!
